Movies of The Bizarre European Cannibal Chunk Gore Movies
I cannot blame just Italians for the Cannibal Gore Boom explosion of the seventies and early eighties but I Mostly can blame them. In Hollywood the Cannibal film of the seventies was The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and like other Hollywood films that involved Cannibalism. The Cannibals were portrayed in a more of Macabre way Like Terror at The Red Wolf Inn. In The sixties there was Hershel Gordon Lewis who pushed the Boundaries of shock horror Violence with movies such as Blood Feast. The popularity of The VHS brought back The Undertaker and his pals which like Blood feast was to be taken lightly and less Scary. A lot of this was because the popularity of Universal movies being sold into syndication on television and were showed on late night tv and of course this brought back the popularity of the Scare film but more in a light hearted way like when children dressed as the Munster's for Halloween.
The European Cannibal Film Included Live Cannibal Tribes that Ate People Alive verses the undead walking Zombies or the Old Psycho Family who wanted to eat you because you looked tasty. I honestly can say a few had good stories and attempted to try to put a little activism in their films. Then there is Jess Franco who tried to capitalize in every film genre that sold and jumped on board the Cannibal Gore genre when the genre was spiraling downward. Most of these Cannibal Exploitation films if you will involved the two things that sold to the 42nd Street Crowd in New York during The X-rated spike during the seventies thanks to the legalization of Deep Throat in America and those two things were sex and violence.
One of the Things that killed the Cannibal Gore Genre was that it ticked off Liberals and Conservatives. It was bad enough that rape was depicted on the Screen but violent rape was depicted on the screen along with the final killing and mutilating of the person. Nudity was all over the The Cannibal Gore film. You could pay a group of Philipino' s to run around half naked chasing a naked beautiful Italian actress at a decent cost in those days and if you really wanted to save money you could make your way to Thailand which was closer to Italy. When Animal activism started to spike in Europe these films were now taboo in many European countries which involved live animals being butchered. If you are going to eat the animal anyways why not get some great footage out of it I say. I know that meat in my hamburger did not get on my bun by walking on it.
Man From Deep River
Man from deep river is basically an Italian version of the American Film Called "Man called Horse" a film in the seventies before Dances with Wolves. I guess that is fair to say you know one of those films were white people are supposed to learn about the other's culture while at the same time saying to themselves look how civilized those savages are. You know films to make pretentious people feel better about themselves why they do nothing for the indigenous people. The Man From Deep River is not bad it is not horribly shot. I really think of it as a Man Vs Man survival film were Man has to do what he can to survive even if it is to adapt to another culture.
Emanuelle and The Last Cannibals
Hey you got your porn in my Cannibal film well you got your cannibal film into my porn. I know during this time Americans were making Star Wars but Italians were making porn for England and Germany who loved that stuff and maybe they got to our beloved 42nd street every once in a while. Even before the bigger budgeted Cannibal films a little film that could called Emanuelle became
the craze over Europe and then Came the black Emanuelle series. What Makes the series of Black Emanuelle so great is that they were filmed in exotic places like Thailand or Turkey or hey the Amazon. Laura Gemser is one of the most gorgeous people who ever walked on the face of the earth. Black Emanuelle series involved high production music recording and wonderful quality filming and they explored every fetish known to man see Emanuelle in America if you do not believe me. In the series of Black Emanuelle, Emanuelle would explore bondage and other taboos so why not the Cannibal Fetish? The year was 1977 and the film would grace the shelf along with the VHS Cannibal films of the Eighties and believe me it holds up right along with them.
Cannibal Holocaust
I am going to say it that Cannibal Holocaust is the greatest European Cannibal Chunk Gore Movie out there. I will start with the soundtrack which still gets stuck in my head in which a good music soundtrack is supposed to although a child of the eighties is thinking why is this the soundtrack? When I have time I will tell you. It was the Highest grossing Horror "Found Footage" Film of the eighties take that Blair Witch. It was an Actually good Found footage film so take that again Blair Witch. The film still stirs in the imagination of any filmmaker on how and why Ruggero Deodato got away with making this controversial film. I definitely would recommend this film to the not so easily offended.
Cannibal Ferox
When filmmakers tried to capitalize on the success of Cannibal
Holocaust many just tanked because the Canibal Holocaust Rip-offs were more of the freaks of cinema. You know filmmakers wanted to see how far they could push the buttons of censors before getting banned and they thought they could make the next Cannibal Holocaust. Cannibal Ferox shows were the spike of the Cannibal Gore films were going. The move Cannibal Ferox lacks the emotional connection with the audience that Cannibal Holocaust had. They saw the Violence of Cannibal Holocaust and really not the story of the film. Ferox is probably one of the better attempts of the Cannibal Holocaust Rip-offs.
Jess Franco's Attempt
You have to love Franco's honesty. He said he did the Cannibal films for the money.
Massacre In Dinosaur Valley
One thing that kept the cannibal gore film genre around for a longer time was the popularity of Indiana Jones. Massacre In Dinosaur Valley could be counted as a Indiana Jones cash grab. It has an Adventurer like Indiana Jones running through the unknowns of the jungles fighting cannibals instead of Nazi's either way I had to throw it in because it has Michael Sopkiw the star of Devil fish in it.
Video and x rated theaters help make the makers of these films rich but if you get one great story is it worth it? You tell me in the comments below. Were these films made to be good or were they made to take the money off the ones who would pay the money to see things they would not be able to see in real life.
