We left Sheriff Alan Pangborn dealing with the devilish temptations of Needful Things.

Now we're picking up the badge again.

And this time, Pangborn has one heck of a murder mystery on his hands.

Timothy Hutton plays writer Thad Beaumont, a respectable author who has another literary identity.

George Stark.

Stark is the pseudonym Thad uses for his murder thrillers. But when Thad decides it's time to retire his alter ego, he doesn't simply make an announcement.

He stages a mock burial.

Goodbye, George Stark.

Rest in peace.

Except...

George apparently didn't get the memo. 😳

🚔 Sheriff Pangborn Is Back

I love looking at The Dark Half as another chapter in the strange career of Alan Pangborn.

He's investigating murders connected to Castle Rock and New York, trying to reconcile evidence that seems impossible with a suspect insisting that something even more impossible is happening. [en.wikipedia.org]

Rooker brings a different energy to Pangborn than Harris did.

And that's part of the fun.

This Pangborn has been dropped straight into a Stephen King mystery in which the rational explanation keeps getting harder to believe.

Because George Stark isn't content with being a name printed on the cover of a book.

He wants a life of his own.

And he intends to collect it.

🎬 Maine... By Way of Pennsylvania!

Here's another little Coconutdaddy movie-location treat.

Although the story belongs to King’s Maine, production brought those locations to Pennsylvania. The AFI notes that the Maine locations were filmed around Pittsburgh, while locations included Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania. [catalog.afi.com]

That's fitting because The Dark Half brings together two genuine masters of American horror:

Stephen King and George A. Romero.

That's what makes the premise so wonderfully King.

What if that darker personality an author puts onto the page didn't want to remain fiction?

What if you couldn't simply stop writing him?

What if...

he started writing the ending himself?

Thad Beaumont wanted to bury George Stark.

Sheriff Pangborn just has to figure out why the dead man...

KEEPS KILLING PEOPLE.
