😈 NEEDFUL THINGS: Be Careful What You Want...

We’re not leaving Castle Rock just yet.

Because there’s a new store in town.

And Sheriff Alan Pangborn has a feeling something isn't quite right.

Pangborn is trying to make sense of a peaceful little town that suddenly seems determined to tear itself apart.

And standing quietly in the middle of it all is...

Mr. Leland Gaunt.

Oh, what a name.

And OH, what an actor.

Max von Sydow plays Leland Gaunt, the mysterious proprietor of a newly opened antique shop called Needful Things. His merchandise seems almost impossibly tailored to the deepest desires of each customer. [en.wikipedia.org], [imdb.com]

You want it?

He has it.

Can't afford it?

Oh, don't worry.

Mr. Gaunt is very reasonable.

Just pay a little money...

And do him one tiny favor.

That's where the nightmare begins.

Gaunt uses those seemingly innocent little transactions to exploit the grudges and weaknesses already buried inside the people of Castle Rock. Soon his customers are turning against one another. [en.wikipedia.org]

That's what I've always loved about the idea behind Needful Things.

Our wants can become so loud that they drown out our needs.

People don't walk into Gaunt's shop looking for evil.

They walk in wanting something.

A treasured object.

A memory.

Relief.

Something they think will finally make everything better.

And that's all Gaunt needs.

⭐ Give Max von Sydow a Line...

Max von Sydow was born to play someone like Leland Gaunt.

Silky smooth.

Perfectly polite.

And somehow capable of making you uncomfortable while barely raising his voice.

Give Max von Sydow an ordinary line and he can make it sound like it was carved onto a stone tablet three thousand years ago.

And then they give him THAT LINE.

You know the one.

"Blame it on the..."

Oh my. 😈

I’m leaving the rest right there for those who haven't seen it.

Sometimes a great actor doesn't need a giant speech.

He just needs the right words, the right expression and that magnificent voice.

🚔 The Sheriff Versus Temptation

And that's why I like keeping Sheriff Pangborn at the center of our visit.

Ed Harris doesn't try to out-weird the weirdness surrounding him.

He plays Alan like a man desperately trying to understand why everybody he knows has apparently lost their minds.

Bonnie Bedelia, Amanda Plummer, J.T. Walsh and Ray McKinnon round out a wonderfully sturdy cast around Harris and von Sydow. [imdb.com], [imdb.com]

But ultimately, it's Pangborn versus Gaunt.

The sheriff versus the salesman.

One man trying to hold Castle Rock together.

The other discovering just how cheaply people will sell their better judgment.

🥥 THE COCONUTDADDY VERDICT

I think Needful Things is one of those Stephen King adaptations with an idea that sticks with you.

Because maybe Mr. Gaunt's greatest supernatural power isn't really supernatural at all.

Maybe it's simply knowing what somebody wants badly enough to stop asking what it's going to cost them.

And that makes Needful Things the most dangerous little store in Castle Rock.

So come on in.

Look around.

Find that one thing you've always wanted.

Mr. Gaunt will even make you a deal.
